Jack Mairs was married and widowed before he married Eunie, about 1926
to 28. Jack and his first wife had two daughters, Betty and Jane. They
were about the ages of Naomi and Phoebe Mackway. Betty was about 10 and
Jane about 8 years old when Jack and Eunie married. In the Atlantic
City photo with Louise, Betty is on the left. I think that Eunie began
to use her first name as her primary name at the time of her marriage in
deference to Betty Mairs, whose legal name was Elizabeth Mairs. As a
child, Eunie had been called Liz, as Aunt Louise called her lifelong.
Eunie's name was Eunice Elizabeth, and consistent with Grandma's habit
with her first three daughters, was called by her second name. The Jack
Mairs family lived at 1424 Pine Street, Norristown. Jack's parents
lived quite close, just down the alley a bit. Jack's parents were
opposed to Eunie having her own child, who she might favor over their
older granddaughters, and they encouraged Jack to forbid Eunie to have a
child. He did, to Eunie's disappointment. AnnMarie |
